One of the most well-liked, well-respected players in league history, he was an outstanding player, manager, umpire and board member (and do not overlook his Air Force service too), he was equally popular with the guys he drafted on his beloved Buccaneer’s teams along with opponents alike. You did not want to face him pitching to you in a big spot, as he was a top pitcher and with a lifetime batting average over .550 including over 1,100 hits at the time of his induction. As a manager, he had a winning percentage over .550 at the time of his induction. Always one to lend a hand and humbly be there whenever needed, was always a tough out who could hit to all fields and be counted on to hit behind the runners, being especially adept at hitting to right field. An inspiration to all who have ever met him.
